New DelhiMaria Corina Machado, the leader of the opposition in Venezuela, has stated that she thinks she will be elected president when the "right time" arrives. The comments were made by the Nobel Peace Prize winner in a Fox News interview.
"We are going to transform Venezuela into that land of grace, and I think I will be elected as the first female president of Venezuela when the time comes," Machado declared.
Machado's global tour following his Nobel Peace Prize victory
After reappearing in December to accept her Nobel Peace Prize in Norway, Machado is currently traveling throughout Europe and the United States. After years of political pressure and repression against Venezuela's opposition, she has returned to the public eye.
Opposition views the US policy change as a setback.
For many years, the opposition in Venezuela, supported by both Republican and Democratic U.S. administrations, had promised to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro and bring democracy back to the oil-rich country.
But when US President Donald Trump permitted Maduro's vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, to take over, opposition leaders suffered a significant blow. Machado and the majority of other well-known opposition figures are currently either imprisoned or in exile.

Since taking office again, Trump has publicly stated that he wants to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
