LondonPresident Donald Trump's demand to buy out Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, has caused tensions between the US and the EU to skyrocket. The US president's demand to impose 10% tariffs on a number of European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and others, has been fiercely opposed by the EU. According to Trump, if his demands are not fulfilled, he will impose additional tariffs of 25%.
"The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them," Trump stated during the tariff announcement on Truth Social.
The European countries have responded by cautioning that Trump's threats "undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral." The European countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland, said in a joint statement that the tariffs are completely incorrect and could help China and Russia.
"We stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland," they declared. "Building on the process started last week, we stand ready to engage in a dialogue based on the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty that we firmly believe in."
The military presence of Europe in GreenlandA number of European countries have sent military personnel to Greenland due to concerns about a potential forcible occupation of Danish territory. According to Germany's defense ministry, a 13-person reconnaissance team has been sent on "an exploration mission." According to a CNN report, Norway has also sent two military personnel.
One naval official from the Netherlands has traveled to Greenland. In a similar vein, one military member has also been sent by the UK. Finland has sent out two military liaison officers in the interim. A media report claims that France has sent the maximum number of personnel—15—to Greenland. Sweden, however, has dispatched three officers.

However, over time, the US military's presence in Greenland has diminished. Trump claims that he wants the Danish territory to act as a check on China and Russia. "When the United States controls Greenland, NATO becomes much more powerful and efficient. He had recently stated, "Anything less than that is unacceptable."
