DhakaAmidst the ongoing violence against minorities in the neighboring country, a Hindu trader was beaten to death on Saturday in the Gazipur district of Bangladesh. According to preliminary information, the victim is Liton Chandra Ghosh, the proprietor of Boishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel.
He was allegedly attacked by some individuals at the Boro Nogor road in the Kaliganj area of the Gazipur district at approximately 11 am (local time). Ghosh, a 55-year-old man known to the locals as Kali, was fatally struck by a shovel. Three people have already been detained by the police, who have now started an investigation.
In the past 24 hours, there have been two Hindu deaths. Another man was killed on Friday in the Rajbari district when he attempted to stop a car that was attempting to leave a gas station without paying. It's unclear, though, if it had anything to do with the targeted murder of Hindus in Bangladesh.
According to local media reports, the victim was Ripon Saha, a 30-year-old employee of Goalanda Mor's Karim Filling Station. According to local media reports, citing police and witnesses, a black SUV stole fuel valued at Tk 5,000 (roughly Rs 3,710) and tried to escape without paying. Saha was crushed to death when he attempted to stop the car.
The SUV was taken by the police, who also detained its driver, Kamal Hossain (43), and owner, Abul Hashem (55). "We're going to file a murder case. According to Khondakar Ziaur Rahman, chief of Rajbari Sadar Police, "the worker stood in front of the car after they refused to pay for fuel, and they ran him over before fleeing."
Targeted attacks against Hindus, who make up 7.95 percent of Bangladesh's population (roughly 13.13 million), have increased since radical leader Sharif Osman Hadi was killed. Ahead of the parliamentary elections on February 12, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) has also claimed that there has been an increase in intercommunal violence in the nation.
It claims that just in December of last year, 51 instances of communal violence were reported. It claimed that the purpose of all these attacks is to keep minorities from casting ballots in the next general elections.
Concerned about these targeted killings, India has also called on the Bangladeshi government, led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, to protect minorities and take harsh measures against those responsible.
