Washington:Dismissing rumours of any diplomatic friction, United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor announced that the highly anticipated India-US bilateral trade agreement is on the verge of completion, with negotiators hammering out the final "1 or 2 per cent" of the legal text.
Ambassador Gor told delegates at the IX US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit 2026 that the relationship was in very good shape and President Donald Trump remained firmly committed to a “winwin” alignment with New Delhi.
Judicial intervention leads to short administrative delays in trade pactThe trade pact, which has been actively developed for around 18 months, has experienced short administrative delays due to a recent judicial intervention. But high-level diplomatic intervention in the past week has pushed it back toward the finish line.
On the issue of the interim trade deal, Gor said that the Supreme Court’s recent intervention had derailed the initial timeline, but assured stakeholders that US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Lee Greer’s recent two-day trip to New Delhi had salvaged the momentum.
Here’s what Sergio Gor said India-US trade deal“We thought that trade deal was done until the Supreme Court decided there was another way,” Ambassador Gor told the summit.
And so we continue to go after that and we are very close. We are hopefully in the final steps of this deal. Just last week, US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Lee Greer visited us for two days in New Delhi. This deal is mostly done. There are a few sticking points on both sides but it's in the last 1 or 2 per cent of that deal," he said.
“It's not any time during the midterms...The Indian side brought it up when the Prime Minister met him in France that he has been invited,” says US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on President Trump's visit to India. Ambassador Gor said the US Mission in India was far better than its European counterparts in bringing $20.5 billion of brand new investment back to the United States this year alone.
“People ask me, ‘Why is this taking so long? We’ve been working on this trade deal for a year and a half.” For perspective, it took 20 years to negotiate the European trade deal. “And so no matter what, I think we’re in good shape, in terms of beating the European deal,” he added.
The US envoy to India expressed optimism about the bilateral relationship and credited it to the personal equation between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Trump has fond memories of his visit to India: US envoyPeople say, Why is this taking so long? We’ve been at this for a year and a half now. 20 years of trading, to put some perspective on it. "So whatever happens, once we get over the European deal, I think we are in good shape. But I’m determined to put this to bed,” he said.
“The President has very fond memories of his visit to India and continues to talk about it,” the US envoy said. One of his most memorable visits was the last time he came and he still talks about it. He has a very high opinion of it. It's an amazing thing. “So I look forward to … having the President visit us back in India,” said Gor. The ambassador also said that the Quad foreign ministers are to meet in the Philippines in about two weeks.
