Miami:Brazil bounced back to top Group C with an emphatic 3-0 win over Scotland, while Morocco also advanced to the knockout stages after a thumping 4-2 victory over Haiti. Scotland finished the group stage on three points and will now wait to see if they are one of the top eight third-placed teams to qualify for the Round of 32.
Vinicius Junior scored twice and Matheus Cunha added a second half goal to ensure Carlo Ancelotti’s side finished Brazil’s group stage unbeaten. With this,
now as group leaders of their league on 12 consecutive editions.
Specifically Scotland came into the match needing a result to boost their qualification hopes and were competitive for long spells. Steve Clarke's side had more possession for long spells of the first half but a defensive error gave Brazil an early lead and changed the game.
Brazil grew more comfortable as they went ahead. They were content to sit and compactly defend, rather than force attacks, and wait for the spaces Scotland left behind. Vinicius was the main threat throughout, finding space in transition time and again as Scotland pushed men forward in search of an equaliser.
Scotland, despite having periods of territorial control, was unable to convert ownership into concrete opportunities. Their attacks often fell apart around the edge of Brazil’s penalty area, where the South Americans defended with discipline and restricted chances in dangerous central areas.
Cunha then added a third goal for Brazil to underline the difference between the teams in the final third as the second goal had all but killed off any hopes of a comeback. There was also a welcome moment for the Brazilian supporters when Neymar came on in the 76th minute as he continued his return from a lengthy injury absence. He returned for Brazil colours for the first time since October, 2023.
Morocco’s comeback and Haiti’s resilienceMorocco gave one of their most fluent attacking performances of the tournament to beat Haiti 4-2 in the other match in the group. Haiti’s porous defense was picked apart repeatedly in transition, with goals from Achraf Hakimi, Ismael Saibari, Soufiane Rahimi and Yassine Kechta.
Not so for the AFCON winners though. They were behind twice in the game but they managed to come back and especially in the second half had a string of attacks. Brazil and Morocco now progress with momentum, having shown attacking quality and tactical discipline when it mattered most.
