New Delhi:US President Donald on Wednesday signalled a huge shift in government transparency about Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). Speaking to reporters, the President confirmed his administration is planning to declassify years’ worth of highly classified information on unidentified flying objects, or UFOs. He suggested the disclosures could involve tantalizing disclosures that have fascinated the public for generations.
“I think we’re going to be pushing everything we can out in the near future. And for some reason, and I guess it's just a reason, it's been on people's minds for a long time, and that is such, they want to find out about the UFOs and uh, anyting having to do with UFO or related material. And we’re going to be releasing a lot of things that we have, and I think some of it is going to be very interesting to people,” Trump said.
Trump talks to pilotsThe President said he was intrigued by the topic because of his own personal conversations with military members who have confronted the unknown in the cockpit.
“I’ve done some interviews, especially, for my first term, but I’ve interviewed some pilots, very solid people,” he said, recalling past hearings. And they said they saw things you wouldn't believe. "So you're gonna be reading about it.
Trump said his information comes from credible military pilots, giving weight to the legitimacy of the recent UAP sightings. The administration said the declassification process is already in progress, but no date was given.
The "UFO" files have been classified to the extreme historically and this is the most significant executive push for disclosure in American history.
The move follows a directive earlier this year when Trump asked the Department of Defense to release files linked to “alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) and unidentified flying objects (UFOs)”. The administration is expected to make these records available on a digital platform for the public to access.
US lawmaker Tim Burchett was among those calling for greater transparency on the issue, according to a report by The Hill. “These people are seeing things out there,” he said, noting that some of the reported objects seem to demonstrate capabilities beyond known technology, such as sharp turns at high speeds and long periods of hovering.
In general, the term “UFO files” refers to declassified documents and records concerning sightings, military encounters, radar and infrared data and pilot testimonies. Such records, held by agencies like the National Archives and Records Administration, contain decades’ worth of material collected during investigations.
Old mystery, new attentionArea 51 is a secret U.S. Air Force base in Nevada where advanced aircraft are tested and has long been the subject of the public's fascination with UFOs. The base has long been the subject of conspiracy theories involving secret technology and possible alien contact.
There has been a growing interest in recent years, but official findings have been conservative. A 2024 Pentagon-related report said there was no clear evidence linking UAP sightings to extraterrestrial sources. Many of the cases involved problems with drones, weather balloons or sensors.
Trump, on the other hand, said that the next release might give us more information than previous reports. He said, "We're going to be putting out a lot of things that we have."
Interest in the topic has grown again since the government promised to make more information available soon. People have been arguing about these files for decades, and the expected release of them could add new information to the public record.
