What happened to Celina Jaitly’s son Shamsher?
Celina in July 2023 spoke about one of the most painful phases of her life, the loss of her son Shamsher during her second twin pregnancy in 2017. The No Entry actress shared an emotional post revealing she went into labour at 32 weeks and lost her baby boy to a congenital heart condition.
With the note Celina sent with some very personal photographs, one of which showed her holding Shamsher, her husband, Peter Haag stood beside her. She also posted a close up shot from the NICU and one of the whole family. She had talked about why it took her years to speak out about the experience. It took me 5 years to come to terms with this episode of our lives but I have finally gathered the courage to talk about my ordeal to help many parents who reach out to @haag.peter & I as they deal with the trauma of preterm birth and loss of a baby," Celina wrote.
She said that she and Peter wanted other parents in similar situations to know that healing is possible. “Peter n I want parents like that to know they can make it through this. Preemie babies are truly survivors and we both can vouch from personal experience. #preemies teach us about the power of faith & prayer and the will of the human spirit. “Remember that most #prematurebabies survive and live perfectly normal, healthy lives (sic).”
Celina also recalled the emotional toll of being in the neonatal intensive care unit, worrying about their son Arthur, who survived, after the loss of Shamsher. “The NICU was a strange and difficult place. “From our experience, to accept that there will be good days and bad days will help you to feel less shocked & worried when challenging days happen,” she wrote.
She said that even when Arthur was in the NICU, she and Peter moved into the hospital in Dubai for a couple of months because the trauma of losing one child scared them for the other. “Not an option for everyone, but Peter & I moved into the same hospital in Dubai for the few months of #nicu as the loss of Shamsher left us immensely anxious about Arthur and feelings of frustration, intense sadness, nervousness, disappointment, guilt, anger, love overwhelmed us too (sic),” she shared.
The actress also used her post to offer comfort and support to parents of premature babies, assuring them that the emotional roller-coaster they’re on is completely normal. Please know that you are not alone in how you are feeling. Almost every preemie parent experiences extreme & sometimes contradictory emotions at one point or another. “It is very important at such a time to remember you can be more effective together than alone so watch your teamwork as parents,” she wrote.
She signed off the note with a message of hope, encouraging parents to stay emotionally connected with their babies, even in difficult circumstances. “Talking and singing softly to your preemie in the NICU is a great way to bond and feel close, even when you can’t hold him. Remember Impossible odds set the stage for incredible miracles. “There is a lot of suffering in the world but there is a lot of fighting it”(sic).
Celina filed a case against Peter Haag for domestic violence, cruelty and manipulation in November 2025. She had also claimed Rs 50 crore and other damages. The case is now in the courts.
